OXIFREE in Power Production Facilities
Corrosion is a costly enemy that causes billions of dollars in losses each year for companies. Other industrialized nations must be experiencing corrosion issues of a comparable magnitude. This coupled with the ever-increasing shift towards international purchasing and shipping gives rise to a significant worldwide corrosion issue. With the ever increasing cost of energy and resources, the cost of corrosion will only increase.
As processes for power production become more varied and inventive with the use of harnessing natural resources such as Geothermal and hydroelectricity production, wind farms, wave/tidal energy recovery, solar energy recovery, etc., the geographic situation of these facilities have meant that corrosion and contaminants are having a large effect on the cost of production.
Oxifree metal encapsulation and anti-oxidizing properties will enable a greater economic return from energy production by extending serviceable longevity of metal parts such as bolts, flanges, inspection panels, bearing housing, hatches, hinges, valves, etc. Oxifree will not only shield against corrosion but also protect against ingress of dust, pollen, mud, sand/grit, and moisture.
NORDLOCK Washer in POWER GENERATION
Different sources need different methods, but reliability is always the key
Energy and power have become so essential to us that it’s now almost as important as air and water. Today it is generated from an increasing number of sources. From raw materials such as coal, natural gas or petroleum, to more recent methods involving natural elements including sun, air, and sea.
As our reliance on power and energy grows, so do the challenges faced when extracting it. Diminishing natural resources and demands for clean renewable energy mean that we need to source power from increasingly isolated and inaccessible locations. Machinery is also expected to withstand a growing amount of pressure in extreme conditions, meaning that bolted connections must be more reliable than ever.
The Nord-Lock Group products are specifically developed to help you find the most practical answers to these challenges. We can offer you a variety of bolt tightening solutions that are quick and easy to install, without requiring frequent checking or retightening. Whether you work far out to sea or deep beneath the ground, these advantages can increase the lifespan of your application and minimize downtime.
From the Nord-Lock washers that can withstand the high temperatures of gas platforms to Typhoon tensioners that are specially designed for space-restricted applications such as wind turbines – we have a solution for every application in the sector. For this reason, Nord-Lock Group products can be found in countless applications including wind turbines, solar panels, steam-powered generators, hydroelectric valves, irradiated areas, and many more.

NORBAR in Precision Tools for The Energy Generation Industry
From coal-fueled plants to higher safety critical areas of the nuclear plants and, more recently, extensive involvement in the wind energy industry, Norbar’s tools and instruments help make our power generation industry run more efficiently, reliably, and cleanly. Increasingly, our attention is focused on renewable energy, particularly wind energy, which presents new issues both in manufacture and maintenance, particularly since the plant often has to operate in extremely hostile environments, including off-shore. This smaller plant requires torque tools to be compact, light, accurate, and extremely robust.
Torque Wrenches
Norbar’s torque wrenches have been used throughout the power generation industry from the equipment manufacturers producing the plant through to power generation sites and the electricity distribution infrastructure.
The features making Norbar wrenches especially suitable for this industry include accuracy that exceeds the requirement of international standards, backed up with a traceable calibration certificate supplied with each wrench. Robust ratchets with a narrow engagement angle allow the use of wrenches in tight spaces. Users of Norbar’s Professional series wrenches in elevated positions such as wind turbine nacelles will particularly appreciate their lightweight and compact dimensions.
Norbar’s electronic torque wrench, NorTronic®, provides a host of possibilities for high precision torque and torque/angle tightening and auditing of fastened bolts. NorTronic’s wi-fi capability enables data to be wirelessly collected from the wrench either in real-time or by batch data transfer at a time of the users choosing. The supplied PC software allows easy management of the collected data and sophisticated set-up of the torque wrench.
Norbar now offers a range of torque wrenches up to 2,000 N•m that can be split for storage and transportation. These wrenches are perfect for mobile maintenance crews as they are easily transported and assembled and disassembled in seconds.
Pneumatic Torque Multipliers – PneuTorque®
Norbar has 50 years of experience in the manufacture of PneuTorque® pneumatic torque wrenches and now offers an unparalleled range stretching from under 500 N•m to 300,000 N•m. PneuTorque® wrenches offer accurate and quiet torque, almost free from vibration.
Although mostly used in bolting applications, the power generation industry has found other invaluable uses for the accurate, smooth power delivery of PneuTorque® wrenches. These include rotating hydroelectric turbines under maintenance, valve actuation, opening, and closing coal hopper doors, and weld testing.
All PneuTorque® wrenches are optionally available with a torque transducer for accurate torque audit. Such a system has been used in the highly safety-critical area of fastening the lids of nuclear waste flasks.
Electronic Torque Tool – EvoTorque®
When Norbar embarked on their project to launch a torque multiplying gearbox powered by an electric motor, the starting point was an evaluation of products already on the market, most of which use electric drill motors as their power source. We were shocked by the poor quality of most of these products. The main issue is the lack of management of motor inertia which results in huge differences in applied torque between joints of high torque rate and joints of low torque rate. Mostly, users will be completely unaware that on a ‘soft joint’ (one that requires more than 360° from snug to fully tighten) their electric torque tool might be delivering half the torque that the same tool might deliver to a hard joint. Conversely, when electric tools are used to check bolts that are already tight, legacy tools can add a large amount of torque to the joint just in doing the test.
With a patent-pending on the motor technology behind the EvoTorque®, Norbar is confident that their tool is the most accurate available on the market.
Norbar’s automated Torque Wrench Calibrator (TWC) enables testing and calibration in accordance with ISO 6789-1:2017 and ISO 6789-2:2017
BOLTIGHT ECHOMETER: ULTRASONIC BOLT LOAD MEASUREMENT
The Echometer range uses ultrasonics to measure the elongation, stress, and load in fasteners. Offering quick and accurate measurements with readings displayed on easy-to-read screens.
The units work with most bolt tightening systems and are used to monitor the fastener during the tightening process to ensure accurate initial loading. The retained load in the fastener can then be monitored at any time.
The Echometer Premier is our premium product with enhanced features and software functionality, Echometer+ is a mid-range product that delivers more features and performance than the original handheld Echometer.
Advantages
- Easy to operate
- Compact and durable
- Minimal operator training required
- Provides elongation, load, stress and strain measurements
- Accurate and reliable
- Simple data recording and reporting
- ISO 9001: 2015. All tools are assembled, filled with oil and pressure tested prior to despatch.
